Comments: Served on CAG-2 (with OR and the 4th division)from lead-up to recommissioning till February, 1958 - terrific times with great shipmates! Had phone calls recently from Richard Chesmore and Bob Burns who were stars of the radio gang some fifty years ago.
Wife, Maureen Shannan, and I "dropped anchor" in Lancaster last November after 44+ years in DC - 35 with the Voice of America and five with Natl Assoc of Chain Drug Stores.

Comments: Sad News. Paul Barrette has passed on 3/6/2007. He served on CA-70 when she was torpedoed in WWII. He has mugs and hats from many Canberra reunions. He always spoke fondly of his time on the ship. He was a great man.

Comments: Served from 1966 to 1969 OI Division. Three WestPac cruises, First ship to fire on North Vietnam, First Flag Ship for Operation Sea Dragon. Thirty days in the Sea of Japan playing war games with the Soviets during the Pueblo incident. Thirty days non-stop firing during the Battle for Hue, 1968 Tet Offensive. Numerous running gun battles with North Vietnamese shore batteries during all three WestPac deployments. We kept a running total of rounds fired in the Combat Information Center, The USS St. Paul (CA-73), claims most rounds fired during the Vietnam conflict, 93,000+ rounds. Sorry St. Paul, during my three cruises we fired 25,000+ during my first cruise, 35,000+ during second cruise, and 48,000+ during third cruise for a total of 108,000+ rounds fired. This does not include the Canberra's first deployment, which was limited to South Vietnam waters. The Canberra sailors of this era just may have seen more action than any other ship in history. After my third cruise I ended up spending a year at Advanced Tacticle Support Base Go Dau Ha, RVN, one mile from the Cambodian border on the Van Co Dong river with RivDiv 592.

I found this site while doing some googleing with my grandson. I got to show him the pictures and explain how we got hit. In fact I was right below the damage when the torpedo hit.

I like the site and it was great to see some old names I served with.

Comments: I have in my possession a Zip Lighter which I've had since the late sixties while in the Navy. Enscribed on it is CLERICO on the front and embossed with the USS CANBERRA CAG-2 SOUTH VIETNAM and on the back is enscribed WESTPAC 1966-67 with a Kangaroo enscribed as well. I can't remember who gave it to me, but hey someone might know.

    Cheers :-))
