  • Naval Gunfire in DMZ Posted on March 13, 2009 12:40 am Name: Joe Brett
    Email: brettst@cox.net
    Location: Scottsdale, Arizona

Comments: I adjusted your 8"guns on targets located in the DMZ in Vietnam. Although an army artillery aerial observer (call sign Sundowner Yankee), we got the mission after the 3rd Marine Div was pulled out of nothern I corps.Your radio communicator had fun with me by immitating an Aussie accent and making me believe you were an Aussie ship. I then made a fool of myself as only a young Lt can do. I saw your hat on one of your mates here in Arizona and just had to say hello.
    Go Navy!
  • Deceased Crewman MM2 Vincent Martinez Jr Posted on March 9, 2009 07:34 pm Name: Ken Skalla
    Email: cool59belair@gmail.com

Comments: MM2 Vincent J. Martinez, Jr. was in one of the engine rooms the day of the torpedo attack in 1944. He was lucky enough to make it out. He always felt guilty about that. Vince passed away in 2002 and I, his Son-in-law, just located this site and wish to post his passing. I also am a Navy vet (QM3 on USS Maddox DD731 ('69-'70). Vince had copies of two radio message requests from the torpedo attack, please e-mail me if you would like me to send copies your site. Thank you.
