I have a picture of him playing guitar with three other men, it looks like it was taken on the ship. I have no clue who the men are. If anyone recognizes my dad's name you might be able to figure out who the men with him were if I email the picture to you.

  • Half a century later Posted on July 5, 2015 10:16 pm Name: Hutch
    Email: hutchlawusa@gmail.com

Comments: My home from '65 to'67

Served under two Captains, Mark W. Woods and Elmo Zumwalt (who later became CNO)...

Remember much gunfire support; enough that at times general quarters became port and starboard watch sections as we fired continuously (only ship with major caliber guns in Vietnam)...

some of the charts we navigated by had the water in close to shore as being deeper than it actually was, which made more than one OOD and OOC rather nervous...

we never ran aground although I do remember a close call when we reversed the screws to back out...

The Can-Do had no sonar but we had a fathometer in the charthouse which a striker occasionally had to man because those charts were often found to be inaccurate regarding shifting depths as sand moved on the Vietnamese coastline...

Doesn't seem that long, but I first went aboard more than 50 years ago

    Harry Hutchison Jr.
    QM3 in N-Div.
