I found a Zippo cigarette lighter in my grandfathers garage. He owned a bar in San Diego and often found lighters left there. This one has the name Louis Hynes, USS Canberra, and the number 9448346 etched into it. If anyone knows how to contact him, I would like to return the lighter to its rightful owner.

I was aboard the Canberra from Oct. 1966 to Nov. 1969. I was first in 3rd div. then moved to 6th div. gunners mate. I was there when the guys from the Boston painted there number 1 on us. There when we took the hits from shore batteries. Took her last ride under the Golden Gate, to Hunters Point. Was badly saddened when I found out she was scrapped. She was a great ship, and I have never forgotten her. Had some great times in the ports we visited, and still remember many of my friends. Would like to hear from some of them, like Robert M Turek and Jack T Kemmer. I have been watching this site for a while and it keeps getting better, thank for putting it together. Happy Days and Smooth Sailing.

Very nice site and good links. The USS Canberra obviously has some sentimental attachment to Australians.

To say I was very surprised to see a newspaper article about the Canberra reunion would be an understatement .I served about the can do in 62 and 63 as the ships artist. I worked out of the PIO office with Bill Shann JO2. Most of the artwork done during that period was mine. I made the Med cruise with her and had a blast. I would love to here from anyone who remembers the PIO staff and all those port pamphlets I drew. I must have drawn a thousand kangaroos over that time, including one of Admiral Pinney Kang. I hope to here from anyone soon. My web site is wstreeks@aol.com

My grandfather, Robert Monroe Clarke, CEM served on the U.S.S. Canberra during WW II. He was one of the 23 men who lost their lives during the Japanese attack on October 13, 1944. If anyone knew him or has any information about him, please contact me. This is a wonderful site. Although I never knew my grandfather, I feel closer to him by reading the information presented here. I was especially moved by the poem by George S. Korey and the painting by Richard W. DeRosset and the photograph of the jagged hole the torpedo created. Thanks to all the Heroes who served with him.
