It was a pleasant surprise to find your site. I was on the USS Mississippi EAG-128, GMTU-21 (Guided Missile Training Unit -21), 1952-1954. After I got out our unit was split to crew the Boston & Canberra. I am trying to find some former shipmates.

Hi there. I was very pleased to find your website. My father, Claude "Corky" Corkren served on CA 70 and was a plank member. My mother, Mildred, continues to go to your reunions every year. I'm always looking for information about the ship. A few years ago the USS Salem was towed into the Quincy shipyard and opened as a museum. As I took the tour with my children we came to the ward room where there are several pictures of famous Quincy cruisers. There is also a very well done up model of what I think is a minesweeper with a tow rope running off the back and a downed Japanese plane in the water. To my surprise the inscription named the ship and stated it was seen here towing the USS Canberra! I got a good laugh out of that. My brothers and I would like to get together some pictures of the Canberra and present then to the museum. I'd like to copy the pictures from you site if that is okay with you. Again, I'm so glad to see your site up and running.

I served on the Canberra from late 56 to June 60 in the OI Div., and have many fond memories of her. Was proud to serve on such a fine ship. Was sorry to hear she had been destroyed. I put every thing that I could find on her in computer Bookmarks. (Thanks to my wife) Thank you for allowing me to keep my memories alive of that time in my life. James F. Beaver (RD2)

Hi all. Just stopped by to pay my respects to all. My name is Rick Perry, son of William H. Perry out of Norfolk, Va. My father was on the Canberra during its first commission in 1943. He was on it when it took the torpedo. My father at this time has been in the Hospital for about 3 months as he had an amputation of part of his right leg. He is not well at this time and I thought that a note or card or e-mail to him via me would do wonders to help his recovery as he was very proud to have served on the Canberra. His street address is; William H. Perry-101 Newell Lane-Vallejo, California, 94589. If anyone does not know .fyi The Canberra was scrapped about 10 years ago at Mare Island Shipyard in Vallejo, CA. Thank you and great Site. Rick Perry
