The time: Sunday March 28, 2010, 1PM; the place: Sonora, CA from the Red Church to a shopping center one mile away; The purpose: A Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Parade, spurred by the Governor's declaration of this week being the belated Welcome Home to Vietnam Veterans week and organized by the local Vietnam Veterans organization, being the largest in California and the third largest in the Country as far as membership is concerned.
The parade was headed by a Sheriff's and Sonora PD's patrol car with a US Navy sailor's color guard, followed by an active military 25 member band. Before us, where we were sitting, the parade stopped and a flag was unfurled which had flown on the USS Constitution and the band played the Star Spangled Banner. A moving moment. What was amazing is the fact, as the parade progressed down Washington Street, an incessant applause greeted the local and visiting Vietnam Veterans without a pause.
A story can be found in the Friday (3-26-2010) issue of the local paper and probably a recount of the parade on Monday March 29, 2010 at www.uniondemocrat.com
I was transferred off the Canberra in November 1963 before her transfer to the Pacific Fleet and her participation in the Vietnam War.
Smooth sailing to all of you, especially those who served on Canberra during her years in the Pacific.

My dad (James Franklin Cox) was on the Canberra when it was torpedoed Oct. 13, 1944. He was a Machinists Mate First Class in the engine room. He talked about losing his buddies and how close he was to losing his own life. He volunteered to dive and retrieve his shipmates bodies. They had a burial at sea. My dad died in 1995 and I wish I had known about this site before.

My father was one of the 23 killed on 13 Oct 1944. I always assumed he was buried at sea. Was doing genealogy stuff and came across a National Cemetery Admin. web-site and note that he was buried in Section F; Site 207-A in the Zachary Taylor National Cemetery, Louisville, KY. In 1991, I had a memorial headstone placed in Arlington National Cemetery, section H-575 for my dad, as I could not find any other memorial for him. The letter I have from Captain A. R. Early of the USS Canberra indicates that burial services were conducted on the Canberra. I do not know who or how a memorial was placed in the Kentucky National Cemetery.

Howdy to all old shipmates from Aug."66" thru Aug."68". Was in 4th. Div. with BM2 Prater and BM2 Jackson, Matheson, Sheffield, Bloodworth, Lewis and lots more guys back then. Those names come to mind. Moved into 7th. Div. with Holcomb, Corrigan, Beck, Chief Rose, Brown, Moya, and the guys from the weapons office, Vera, Clay and the others. Was transferred off in later Aug. "68" just the day before the ship left for WestPac again and went to PBR school and then in-country for real true to life fun and games. Got back in Feb. "70" and had Gary Lange in the Riv. Div. and he was off the ship also. We still keep in touch as with Chief Rose and Sheffield. Had a great time Holy-stoning the deck for our trip to Ausy land. Times that will not be forgotten. Got out as a GMG2.

Last year we were lucky to visit the Australian Maritime Museum in Sydney, and were told the full, amazing story of the USS Canberra.
Anyone who served on that ship can be very proud of there dedication to service.. in memory of the original H.M.A.S Canberra.

I served aboard the Canberra from Feb, until Dec. 1962. I came aboard the night before we went to the Med for seven months. Was aboard during the Cuban Missile crisis. Discharged late Dec to return to school. I came aboard as a HM3 and made HM2 in the fall. I tried to talk my way out of the promotion as I was getting out in Dec, two moths early. I ran the treatment room and held sick call every morning.
This will probably turn a lot of former shipmates off. I am half way through my sex resignment. That is the reason for the email address. My name is now LeeAnn Martin.

My Father, Gary Hartley, was aboard the USS Canberra from 1966 to 1968. He just passed away on Jan.12th, 2010. He had a very rare cancer (Mantle Cell Lymphoma). My family believes toxins from Vietnam were to blame. He was a healthy man up until last year, planted his own garden, walked miles in the woods ALL the time. Hunted, fished, quit smoking when he was twenty five & wasn't an alcoholic. He died twenty years too soon.
