Comments: I served aboard Canberra on her final cruise 1968-69 as a SF3 in R-Div. It was the best and worst of my navy time. When I mentioned to my father, a navy vet from WWII, that I had experienced nearly 100 GQ's in one months time he exclaimed that he hadn't experienced half that many in all of the invasions he participated in.

Comments: James Robert (JIM BOB)JOHNSON (1918-1987) I would dearly love to hear anything about his service. He was a First Lieutenant (USMC) possibly in charge of a 20MM battery. He left me a very well preserved "Blue Fleet" certificate with an embossed stamp.

I am currently an IT consultant in suburban Minneapolis, MN.
  • Thanks Posted on May 3, 2008 01:41 am Name: Jim Steele
    Email: jfsteele@comcast.net

Comments: Thanks for keeping the memory of the USS Canberra alive. My dad, Chief Petty Officer Hugh Steele, was assigned to the Canberra from the time the keel was laid down until its first decommissioning in 1946. His memory is not good, but he still remembers his ship and shipmates. I'm thankful for the history and memorabilia I've been able to collect for him.
I'm sure he'd be at your reunion if he could; he attended many and always enjoyed them.

RECALL BEING ON LIBERTY IN SANTIAGO, CUBA WHEN MR CASTRO CAME DOWN FROM THE MOUNTAINS.
THE S.P.s CAME AND TOLD US TO RETURN TO THE SHIP.

PLAYED BASEBALL FOR THE SHIP WHEN THE MIDSHIPMEN CRUISE WENT TO SOUTH AMERICA. WE WON THE BATCRULANT DIVISION THAT YEAR. THE MARINES KILLED US IN THE PLAYOFFS.
