My step-father served on the Canberra til September 1969. Although I don't know how long he served on the ship. While he was serving, he and my mother were killed in a car accident labor day weekend of 1969 in San Diego, CA. While going through the guest book of their funeral I found logged that The Chiefs of the U.S.S. Canberra sent flowers. Would like to hear from anybody that knew him. Thanks, Lisa

Does anyone have any information about my uncle? He was one of the lost in 1944. I never got to know him as I was born in 1962 and my mother was very young when he died. I would be grateful for any information about him or his friends and shipmates so I could get to know the man he was. Thank you.

My father was the only surviving man from the engine room that was hit on Friday, October 13, 1944, according to his testimony to me. He said that he was topside when the torpedo hit. He sometimes recounted the horror of "picking up the pieces" of his shipmates.

My father, Franklin Ray Lewis Jr. or Frank as he preferred, served on the USS Canberra during Vietnam. I can not remember what years he was on and unfortunately, he passed away in 2003. I was hoping to find others who served with my father. I know that his years on that ship were some of the most memorable and I grew up always hearing his stories. Hope to hear from you soon and thanks for reading my post.

Anyone know my Dad?
Location: January 1966-68
Comments:
My Father was a Gunners Mate Guns on the Canberra. He came aboard on January 3rd, 1966. I had recently wrote and composed a song about the USS Canberra and my Father titled "Our Canberra Hero". I would like to write a follow up song now. I would like to hear from any shipmates that knew my father personally so I can write about something positive and humorous about good times, names/nick names of people, things he did...etc. I know that the Captain knew him quite well because he was always in a fight or doing something that caused him to be put on restriction. He did tell me about a Puerto Rican dude that ended up beating the tar out of him because the guy was "too fast"! Please email me if you know any good details. Thank you all for your service and bravery during those tough times. Travis Smith

Transferred to the Canberra (CAG-2) from the Springfield (CLG-7) in 1962. Maintained the Mk 100 missile computers in main battery plot.
2 Med. cruises and Cuba. Discharged in 1963 in Norfolk before Canberra went to the west coast. Enjoyed the ship and crew and would do it all again. Anyone serving with me, send e-mail.

CAG-2 Vietcong Battle Flag Presented For Land Action Song Cua Dai

Hello people who are intersted in USS Canberra.
I am from Canberra in Australia and just though I'd let you know of an interesting ebay item that may be some genuine USS Canberra artefacts. I am not selling the item but am just reporting it to you guys in case it is the genuine article.
The item relates to
CAG-2 Vietcong Battle Flag Presented For Land Action Song Cua Dai.
According to the listing
------------------------------------
This is a neat piece of military history. The flag is not in great condition, there are some stains and small tatters. It measures 24" by 40" and is mounted on a split piece of bamboo. There is no lettering on the flag.
However, the neat part is the attached memo written on a piece of note pad paper with "USS Canberra CAG-2 From:Commanding Officer" letterhead. It reads as follows:
"Presented to USS Canberra CAG-2 BY THE Commanding Officer on behalf Lt(jg) THAN RUNN Commander 14th Coastal Group During Land Action off Song Cua Dai Republic of Vietnam 21 December 1966"
I have been very careful to leave the presentation paper attached as found, with staples.I haven't found out what the Canberra did to warrant the flag, but did find out that the Uss Canberra was originally commishioned as a Baltimore class heavy cruiser. Hit by an aerial torpedo in WWII it was refitted as guided missile heavy cruiser. This flag came from the time period correlating to her third deployment to Vietnam from Oct 1966-April 1977.
How did I get this flag? Before Christmas a couple years ago, I bought a Rubbermaid wrapping paper container. It sat in my basement until a few days before Christmas this year, when I was looking for wrapping paper to wrap my wife's present. When I looked in the container I found some old posters, wrapping paper and this rolled up flag. It is exactly as I found it, but I have no idea how it got to King William,Va. I went back to the auctioneer, but he had no recollection of it. I cannot trace a line of possession from Vietnam to here, but have no reason to doubt the authenticity of this piece. If you have any questions, want more pictures, or have any knowledge of this flag, please get in touch. Thanks for taking time to read all this and thanks for your interest,Kurt
---------------------------------------
If this is the real thing it belongs with you people :o)
Happy new year from Australia
Cheers
John Pav
