My father was a mail clerk on the Canberra when it was torpedoed. My mother said he was so shaken by the experience that he couldn't hold a cigarette when he came home. His name was Harvey Messier. If anyone has any information about that day, I would love to hear from you.
Thanks to all the servicemen and women.

My grandfather, who passed away in 1972, used to tell a story of the torpedoing of Canberra. The way he told it, he just left the engine room to get candy bars for the guys...Does anyone know Elbert Chester "Joe" Raymond? James Snead, you may be one of the few living survivors, are you out there?

I was a YN3 attached to fox div.
The gunnery office was my duty station.
Loved my time aboard this mighty ship and the memories of the world cruise.
One of the many highlights would have to be attending the summer Olympic games in Rome. I would love to hear from anyone who was on board from July 1959 to July 1961.

Served aboard Canberra in FOX Division working on the SPQ-5 missile radars from the time the ship left Norfolk, VA in 63 till I was discharged in June 67. Condition 3, four on and eight off. Harassment and interdiction fire. The collision with the USS Buck. The typhoon during transit in 66. Than Hoa, North Vietnam. Chiu Lai, DaNang-Marble Mountain, Hue. The DMZ to the Delta - gunfire. Sunshine- lots of sunshine. The greatest guitar players in the world are at Subic Bay in the bars in town. Shore patrol on the night the Roosevelt Roads couldn't relieve the Kitty Hawk and 3000 sailors turned Subic Bay into the Friday night fights. The Chaplain telling us not to do it followed by the ships doctor telling us how to do it. To those who survived, a cup of coffee. I stopped drinking in 71, drank my share in Subic and some of yours. Wouldn't have missed a minute of it but wouldn't do it again for a million bucks. Worked hard, partied hard. Loved hard! No scars and eternally grateful for those who gave their lives so that I live free and sleep safely at night. "God Bless You"! To those who served and survived "Welcome Home"! Wonderful ship! Fantastic crew!

I just noticed this web page.
My grandfather, John L. Barber Jr., served aboard the USS Canberra during WWII, and was a plank holder. He was a radio operator on board the ship, and spoke often of his service there.
Here on the desk next to me, I have the Morse key (a J-37) which he carried with him throughout the war, and which he continued to use afterward as a ham radio operator in civilian life.
John L. Barber Jr. died in 2005, and his obituary can be found at the following link:
