My home from '65 to'67
Served under two Captains, Mark W. Woods and Elmo Zumwalt (who later became CNO)...
Remember much gunfire support; enough that at times general quarters became port and starboard watch sections as we fired continuously (only ship with major caliber guns in Vietnam)...
some of the charts we navigated by had the water in close to shore as being deeper than it actually was, which made more than one OOD and OOC rather nervous...
we never ran aground although I do remember a close call when we reversed the screws to back out...
The Can-Do had no sonar but we had a fathometer in the charthouse which a striker occasionally had to man because those charts were often found to be inaccurate regarding shifting depths as sand moved on the Vietnamese coastline...
Doesn't seem that long, but I first went aboard more than 50 years ago
Harry Hutchison Jr.
QM3 in N-Div.

Any and all members of this great ship who knew my father, who may have stories of my father or photographs of my father in uniform, I would highly appreciate pictures or information concerning this. They would be highly treasured and sought after for my family.

BTGC Lawrence Howard Gardner served on this ship during WWII. He told me many stories of their voyages and skirmishes including the time they got torpedoed. He had a picture depicting the Canberra as a kangaroo with a bandage on its tail.

Dad commanded 20mm anti-aircraft batteries during the Friday the 13th action off Formosa and witnessed the enemy torpedo striking the ship. He was a tough Texan but admitted being mighty scared that day. He passed away in 1988 and would be 97 today.

My father served on the USS Canberra during WWII. He was a proud Navy man who served 32+ years. He passed away June 1, 2014 unexpectedly. I know he had attended reunions in the past. I just thought I should let anyone who may have known him know of his passing.

I served on this wonderful ship from 1959 thru 1961. I was on the ship when it made the world cruise. I also have a cruise book, but I would not take any thing for it.
You can call me or email me and I would be glad to talk to you about the ship and the cruise. Sorry to hear about your dad. My phone # is 504-885-5725.

I served on the Canberra from 1963-1967. I was a MM2 in the generator gang (B-Div.). It was a memorable part of my life. I was wondering if anyone who served with me can remember the year we went into dry dock in Long Beach, CA? Thanks so much.

My dad served on the USS Canberra during the world tour, his name was Bobby G. Andrews. He passed last year in Dec. from lung cancer. He truly loved talking about his navy days and I searched in vain for a 1960 World Tour Book of the Canberra. Dad had lost his to a house fire. If anyone has any memories, pictures or a tour book please contact me.
Sincere Thanks.

I am looking for a picture of my friend George Roberts who was stationed on the USS Canberra from 1966 to 1969. All his pictures were destroyed and I am trying to help his family replace them. He was a FA and was a "generator man" on board the ship. I am hoping that someone might have a cruise book with a picture of him in it. Thank you all so much for your service to our nation !
Note: I know he was on-board when the ship crossed the equator on 23 April 1967
