Looking for shipmates that served under Captain Edwin M. Rosenberg and Captain Oliver D. Compton ('66-68). My YNSNs in the ship's legal office were Russell Bigbee, Tony J. Denmark (believed deceased) and Alan Allgood who was later YN3. They were all members of X division, and I was briefly its division officer. I was also a CICWO and eventually the Op-Intel Officer (after LtJG B. Peter Carry was RAD'd), all in OR division under Cdr Ted Manduca, and I've heard Chief Fecht is active in the assn. I would like to hear of others, including Phil Gulley who was from Wooster, MASS -- What a hoot! My friend and roomy aboard Canberra, LtJG James O. Saloma, died last year of a heart attack during a burglary of his home in Tacoma Park, MD.

Morey, James "Jim"
LAKE GEORGE:
James "Jim" Morey, 88, of Lake George, passed away Friday, Oct. 19, 2007, at the Glens Falls Hospital with his wife and oldest daughter by his side. Jim was born in North River on July 27, 1919, to Alfred Lee Morey and Mary Converse Morey. He attended the North Creek Schools. On Aug. 5, 1937, he married Marian Baker, beginning a 70 year marriage. His first born daughter, Virginia (Cubby) was born in 1938. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1943, serving on the USS Canberra in the Pacific during World War II. While at sea, Jim and Marian's second child, Gail, was born and was 8 months old before Jim set eyes on her. Their third daughter, Penny, was a "Baby Boomer"; and fourteen years after she was born, they had their son, Ike. Upon returning to the area following World War II, Jim lived in Warrensburg and worked at General Electric in Schenectady, before buying a trucking business in Lake George and relocating to that town. He and Marian operated Morey Trucking for more than 23 years, expanding the business substantially, to include Bolton Landing, South Glens Falls, Glens Falls and Queensbury. Eventually, they bought a cottage in Silver Springs, Fla., where they spent six months each year for 25 years after they retired, commuting via motor home each year between their home in Lake George and their cottage in Florida. Jim will be well remembered for his strength, courage, mechanical know-how, generosity, common sense and his ability to see the humorous aspects of most of life's situations. Jim was an avid hunter and fisherman; especially loving to fish in Nova Scotia for salmon. He loved classic cars and won numerous trophies for his 1968 Shelby, Mustang Convertible. Besides his parents, Jim was also predeceased by his brother, Kenneth Morey; his sister Alleen; his stepmother, Edith Morey; and grandson, Robert Malcolm. He is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Marian Baker Morey; three daughters: Virginia Morey Pike and husband, William, of Corinth; Gail Morey-Couse and husband, Timothy, of Lake George; Penny Morey of Boca Raton, Fla.; Ike Morey and his wife, Linda, of West Melbourne, Fla.; two brothers, Ron Morey and his wife, Rita, Edgar Morey and his wife, Francine; two sisters, Donna Adriance and her husband, the Rev. Carter Adriance, Jeanne Ellis and her husband, Lynn. He is survived by seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; along with many beloved nieces and nephews, including his beloved pug, Dolly. Friends may call on Jim's family from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday evening at the Alexander-Baker Funeral Home, 3809 Main St., Warrensburg. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday, at the funeral home. Burial with full military honors will follow the service in Evergreen Cemetery, Lake George. Pallbearers will be Beecher Baker Jr., Michael Morey, Mark Morey, Mack Morey, Matthew Morey, Scott Malcolm and Tim Couse. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the American Diabetes Association, 7 Washington Square, Albany, NY 12205-5512 in Jim's memory. Served in the 8th and Bosn divisions. Was aboard 1956/1958. Worked for Jack Hubbard in the Bosn locker. Would like to connect with George Dickison who worked the paint locker under BM3 Bell. Like to also connect with Vic Limitone from 8th Division. I'm already in contact with Freddie Nasso, from the 8th division. My wife and I have made many of the yearly reunions but were unable to attend this years reunion.

In their next newsletter, the USN Cruisers Sailors Association plans to publish some remembrances I had from my days aboard Canberra (1965-68). If you are not a member, check them out at http://www.navycruisers.org/. Some fiction may be included, as my memory isn't that good any more. I was division officer for R, 4th, and 2nd Divisions. I got married shortly after the end of the '67-'68 deployment and left the Navy in 1969.

I would love to know if anyone remembers my dad, Howard E. Smith Jr. He was a Gunner on the USS Canberra, I think in 1943. He was injured and returned to Navy base at San Diego. My dad passed away in 1976 and I want to collect as much info as I can for my 9 year old daughter. I teach at an elementary school and I have a student very interested in WWII. Thanks!

I was on board USS MACON CA-132 in the company of USS CANBERRA the summer of 1957. I recently found letters I had written to my parents while I was on that cruise as an ENS MC.(I was in an early commissioning program at that time for medical students.)
I reported in that letter that a man had been lost overboard from Canberra; I never learned the details. Anyone know about that event?
