Today being the anniversary of the torpedo attack that took the life of our uncle, James D. Roberts along with his shipmates, I impulsively called Bob Greco in neighboring Cranford, NJ. Together with Joe Griffen, they toasted their lost high school pal and crew members every year on this date. With Joe's passing last year, I felt compelled to be there for Bob so my in-laws accompanied me & we joined Bob & Betty Greco for an evening of good company & a toast. We will not forget the sacrifice made for us.

Hello. I sent an e-mail to you quite awhile ago to let his shipmates know about his amputation of his right leg. I want you all to know that for those who responded. it lifted his spirits immensely and probably helped to fuel his excellent recovery. My mom is still in a rest home with Alzheimer's disease. Now I want to let you all know that now he's in his last Battle. He has Lymphatic Cancer. He had Prostrate Cancer last year and the doctors were sure it was gone, it was from his prostate, but not his Lymph Nodes. The doctors are giving him about 6 months to live. Of course this devastating to me and my family. We're not expecting another comeback like the last 3 or 4 ailments that struck him down. This one is probably too big. I want to ask all of you, his Shipmates, if you can see your way clear to maybe share some words of encouragement or maybe even talk about the times that you guys shared when you were fighting to preserve our way of life. I am his only son and my dad is, as are you from the last great generation of this planet. I realize that those from your generation may be fading from this earth as happens with all generations, but in my mind yours will always be remembered for being one of the strongest and the most honorable. That alone will ensure that yours will never be forgotten. I have yet to really feel the impact of my father's predicament and it's implications, but I'm sure that I will very shortly. His doesn't have a computer so I'll give you his address. He was on the Canberra during it's initial commissioning, and he was on it when it took the torpedo. He was close friends with Harry Georgeappolis and quite a few others. He also appears in the book Remnants of the Blue Fleet. I don't have the book with me but he's in the photo of a group initiating a "polywog". He's the one standing directly behind the polywog in the white t-shirt and hat.

Hello, I just wanted to thank everyone for a great weekend that me and my wife were fortunate enough to participate in. I am referring to the 1999 reunion this past weekend at the Fairview Marriott in Falls Church VA. We were guests of Chester (Ski) and Mary Skurski. Chet is my father-in-law and invited my wife (Judy) and myself to attend Saturday's functions. It was such a pleasure to see everyone together one more time. It is such a shame that men like the ones that were honored will not have anyone to replace them. I am currently 50 years old and was not able to serve in the military for medical reasons, but I really believe that a part of America will disappear with the end of this era that was honored. Again, thank you all for your contributions that have made America what it is today. Because, without men like your selves, I shutter to think what might have been.

I just found this site about a week ago, and did it ever bring back a bunch of fond memories! I'm a plank owner from Her recommissioning in '56, and served aboard her as a guided missileman in the 7th div. until 8/22/58. I still have the first 3 cruise books from Her as CAG 2. Great site!

Hi! I just attended the 1999 reunion in Falls Church, VA & shared a tremendous moment in time with the shipmates of my husband's uncle, James D. Roberts. It is an occasion I'll treasure always. We've made new friends, soaked up stories and shared laughs as well as the tears. It was a privilege to talk with Jim's friends who walked with him & it's comforting to know his memory is very much alive. I'm sure he would have done the same for all of you. My heart ached for Joe Griffen & Bob Greco who went on the ship with Jim but came home without him. I think of my own high school buddies & how devastating it would have been to lose one of them. A big "thank you" to Paul McManuels for organizing this special event & assisting the Roberts family who heard about the reunion almost "at the last minute." We thoroughly enjoyed the company the Joe Nelson family from MI, Sam Adams of MA (what a hoot!), Charlie Koestner of South Plainfield, NJ, Charlie Forssell of Delran, NJ, Dick & Betty Landis of CA, John Miliano & sons who turned out to be "neighbors" close by and my pal Felix that I kept running into. God bless all of you and thank you for what you did for us.

Good Morning! I have just spent the last couple of hours or so perusing and printing here at the web page. My Dad, Howard F. Miller, was aboard the Canberra in it's earliest and deformed days. He WAS on duty when the torpedo struck, on the 13th of October 1944. Due to the fact that Dad has not been in the best of health as of late, I decided it was important to provide him with as many memories -- both good & bad, that I know he cherishes. Unfortunately, he is not online, so I have tried to to my best to bring everything to him. I am hoping to find any of the men that may remember serving with my Dad, Howard some may have called him "Howie"-- or at least figure out they HAD to, because of the dates he was in the service & on board. This is where I will probably goof up, but I will try my best. To the best of my recollection, he came aboard when she was first left port, and then went to another duty station just a few weeks after the CA 70 was torpedoed. I would greatly appreciate it if any/many of you would wax on about any funny, sad etc. that happened on the ship when the two of you would have been on board at the same time. I hope that you won't mind taking a few minutes to sit down and send me an email, telling me about these happenings in ''43 to '44. I know that I will thoroughly enjoy reading the posts, and I hope to get some insight to the highs and lows of a man at war --- Especially, a man that I have loved & admired all of my life. When it is his "turn", I am sure that Dad will either be delighted or down in the dumps. However, which ever way it goes, I know that he will be very appreciative for being able to relive and be bibulous of this time in his life. I also plan on making the rounds to any other sites that persons from the early Canberra days may visit. So, if you happen to think of us, please pass it along that I am attempting to do this. I will try to be as patient as possible, it is just difficult to do so when I have a fear lurking in the back of my mind, that his medical problems will start to worsen at a more alarming rate. So, I think that I have rattled on more than enough for the day. This will be the second time I have written this, I made a BIG mistake when I tried to submit this earlier, and it came back to me as a failed delivery. Thanks ever so much for listening to me rattle on. Please, take your time and try to appreciate your own experiences as you write down your own thoughts and recollections. If there is any information that you think I may know about, please --- do NOT be afraid to ask. I will do my level best to answer any questions that you may have. For those I have no clue about, I will ask a couple of people I know if they happened to know the answer. The very best to you and yours, and thank you again for your understanding and consideration. Respectfully, Kathi "Miller" Lecksell

My father, David Donovan, was on the Canberra in 1959. I am trying to locate two of his fellow officers who were members of his wedding party-Norm Keller and Charlie Hughes. Also looking for Dave Troyer - I believe he was on, too. If anyone knows the whereabouts of these men, please contact me. Thank you!
