  • USS Canberra added to Agent Orange List Posted on September 19, 2010 12:11 am Name: Ron Riml - FM Division, '66-'68
    Email: ron.riml@myfairpoint.net
    Location: East Boothbay, ME

Comments: Just a note that the Canberra was recently added to the VA's 'Agent Orange List' as follows:

"USS Canberra (CAG-2) [guided missile cruiser] operated on Saigon River from March 31 through April 1, 1966, on Cua Viet River during December 15, 1966, and on Mekong Delta Ham Luong River during January 15, 1967"

I joined the Canberra as an FTM3 in late March of '66 at Subic Bay and remember when we entered the mouth of the Saigon River. I worked on Director #10 (Spook-5 Radar) and then up in Weapons Control as an FTM2 and left her in June of '68. Damn fine ship!!!

    Here's a web link that shows a radio-controlled model I've built of the Canberra - http://ahoy.tk-jk.net/Letters/ServedonUSSCanberraandbui.html

Comments: September 11, 2010: Sonora, CA. An all veterans memorial, recognizing all US services, Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard and Merchant Marine was unveiled at a 6:30 PM event, serving as the base of the flag pole of the new VA medical clinic, which opened six month ago. One of the speakers was the daughter of a sailor, who served on the USS Independence in WW II in the South Pacific. When I talked to him after the event closed, he told me that he vividly remembered the HMAS Canberra, which was sunk by the Japanese Navy at Iron Bottom Sound.
I have been told, that in our County of 55,000 that there are more than 10,000 veterans; beside myself one other being a former Canberra sailor.

He served on the Canberra in the late 50s to the early 60s. He STILL tells AWESOME stories about his time aboard the ship. Large Baby dolls from Italy, sound familiar, hehe? People may remember him because of his piano playing and singing. He still has NOT changed. Please contact me if you have any info or if you know him.
