Comments: My father Walter A Shivers was on board CA-70 from 43-44. He is alive and well in AZ and was very interested to see and hear all about his ship from WWII. He is sad to see so many are no longer with us, but is glad the Canberra is remembered as well as those who died on that fateful Friday. His stories are great... I am lucky to have him around!

Comments: I attended your reunion this last week with my uncle Jim Caldwell. I had an amazing time meeting so many of you and getting a chance to spend this special time with Jim. Unfortunately my Uncle went to the hospital yesterday with some irregularities in his heart but I am sure he will bounced back and we are both looking forward to seeing you all next year in Philadelphia. God bless all of you for making this country so great.

I wanted to drop a note to let you all know that I sincerely appreciate the HONOR of serving you all who served our country aboard the Canberra. I hope that you all thoroughly enjoyed your stay here in San Antonio, and I hope that I will have the pleasure to serve others who have served.

Comments: October 13, was always a special day for my beloved father. He was on board the USS Canberra when it was hit by the Japanese torpedo. His duty assignment was the engine room. He said he had just eaten and had visited his buddies in the damaged engine room. He said he took his duty assignment when the air raid sounded. He said he heard a loud boom and was thrown. He said he knew they had been struck. God spared my Daddy, but in his memory and his fellow Navy buddies who lost their lives I remember them in my prayers and thoughts and also family who have lost their loved ones during the torpedo strike. To this day I am still trying to cope with my prejudice of Japanese and forgive them.

Comments: My father, Kenny Sr. served on the Canberra and told me many stories about the time he served and the equator-crossing rituals, the longest tow in the Navy, and many other stories. I would love to hear from any of his buddies. He had told me that he got off the ship in SFO with a broken leg from a ping pong game on board. Many people thought he was injured in battle. Oh well... Just one of his funny episodes.

Comments: Just came upon this page. I am to give a talk on Veterans Day at my grand daughter?s school, and since I am a plank owner, and was present when CAG-2 was re-commissioned in 1956, I thought I would see if I could bring up pictures of the ship. I served in S-1 Div. from 1955 to 1957. Great ship!!!!!

I remember thinking that she was the most beautiful ship I had ever seen. My opinion has not changed. Fair winds and clear sailing to all who served aboard her. Brian Murphy

Comments: Hi Shipmates, The current HMAS Canberra FFG 02 is decommissioning from active service on the 10 November 2005 after 24 years service, as you are aware the USS Canberra was the namesake of HMAS Canberra 1 a Australian Cruiser that was sunk along with USS Vincennes, Quincy and Astoria on the 9 August 1942 off Savo Island by the Imperial Japanese Navy. On the 10 Sept 2001 the USS Canberra Bell was presented to the people of Australia by The President of the United States to mark the 50th Anniversary of the ANZUS Treaty, the following day 9/11 took place and Australia and the USA jointly envoked the the Anzus Treaty and have been strong allies in the war against terrorism since. The USS Canberra Bell is proudly displayed at the Sydney Maritime Museum. The Defence History of The USA and Australia is a long and proud relationship, another Canberra is about to retire from Active Duty, however the name I am sure will live on in another proud ship bearing the Capital of Australia proud name in the future. Fair Winds Lee Webster
